Call System
Residents work regular schedules in compliance to the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGMA) resident work hours.
Residents work regularly from Monday through Friday. In general residents arrive at work each morning at around 6 a.m. We have three types of call as described below designed with compliance to the ACGME resident work hours in mind.
Backup call is taken from home. On rare occasions the backup resident for the evening may be called in to assist with cases.
Late call involves a resident being available to stay until the early evening to assist in late operative cases and/or the evaluation of patients having surgery the following day.
Overnight call involves a senior resident and two junior residents staying until the following morning with the rest of the post-call day off.
Residents who are neither on overnight or late call can expect to be able to leave work by the late afternoon each day. Call is more frequent during the foundational CA-1 year and becomes progressively less frequent for senior residents. Saturdays are covered by moonlighting residents, and Sundays and holidays are covered by nurse anesthetists.
